I was sitting outside of the Comedy Club in Caxton Street, Paddington (Brisbane, Q) on a Thursday night when I looked across the street and saw this vignette. I straight away took a photo of it. The guy on the bike is a food delivery driver going about his business. I love the mix of old and new in this area of Brisbane, and the scene before me caught both that and the 'normality' of the late week-night delivery.
I am often drawn to night scenes, and find an enjoyable challenge in attempting to render them as convincingly lit.
Gouache is such a patient medium to work with. It's ability to reconstitute with water makes it so easy to blend, whilst the opaque nature of it makes linework a breeze... and there's a LOT of lines on the brickwork here!
